Where a Retinol Serum Fits Around a Hydration Routine

Adding a retinol step to a routine that's already built around hydration is where most people get the order wrong.

The simplest way to think about it: hydration steps can go morning and night, every day. A retinol or treatment step is usually nighttime-only, and it doesn't replace your hydration step — it goes in addition to it, after cleansing and before a moisturizer.

A four-step night routine looks like this:

1. Cleanse
2. Hydrating serum (multi-weight hyaluronic acid)
3. Treatment (retinol + peptides)
4. Seal it in with a moisturizer

In the morning, skip the treatment step and go straight from hydrating serum to moisturizer to sunscreen.

A common mistake: introducing a retinol every single night right away. Most people do better easing in — every second or third night for the first couple of weeks — before working up to nightly use, depending on how skin responds.

None of this is about doing more steps for the sake of it. It's about giving hydration and treatment their own jobs, instead of asking one product to do both.
